Preston High School

Preston High School is a Catholic girls' high school on the picturesque shoreline between the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge and the Throg's Neck Bridge, at 2780 Schurz Avenue, Bronx NY 10468.  Its telephone number is 718-863-9134, and its website is linked here.  In the above photo, at left is the mansion once the residence of Collis Huntington.

In New York City, several MTA bus routes have branches that serve high schools.  This is a branch of the crosstown Tremont Avenue bus.

St. Frances de Chantal, Throgs Neck

See pages 482 and 483 for St. Frances de Chantal, established as a parish in 1926. The present church at the intersection of Harding Avenue and Hollywood Avenue in Throgs Neck dates from 1970. The rectory address is 190 Hollywood Avenue, Bronx NY 10465, and the phone number 718-792-5500. The parish website is here. According to the AIA Guide, the architect of the 1970 church was Paul W. Reilly, who also designed St. Vincent Ferrer church in Naugatuck, Connecticut.

The above photo looks west across Hollywood Avenue. Buses Bx40, Bx42, and BxM9 stop near the church.

The Chapel in the upper church lobby is open weekdays from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. for private prayer.

A newer, larger wing of the school is to the left. The school address is 2962 Harding Avenue, Bronx NY 10465, telephone 718-892-5359. The school website is linked here. There appears to be one section of students per grade.

Adjacent southeast is the Jeanne Jugan Residence, a work of the Little Sisters of the Poor. The property was formerly the site of a monastery of Poor Clares.

St Benedict, Otis Avenue, Throgs Neck

The church steps face Otis Avenue. Just one block west is busy East Tremont Avenue.

At the rear of the church (the north side, that is) a trench carries the traffic of Interstate 95, here called the Bruckner Expressway. Terence Cardinal Cooke (1921-1983) hailed from this parish twenty or more years before the highways arrived.

See page 482 for St Benedict's parish in Throgs Neck, established in 1923 by Benedictines from Collegeville, Minnesota. The present church dates from about 1960. In 1976 (thanks to a reader who commented), the parish was transferred from the care of the Benedictines to archdiocesan priests. I have been unable to determine whether the boundaries of the Village of Unionport included territory later within this parish, as the bicentennial history implies. The rectory address is 2969 Otis Avenue, Bronx NY 10465, telephone 718-828-3403.  The church website is linked here.

Shown below is the parish school at 1016 Edison Avenue, a half-block south of the church. Both are in a quiet neighborhood of private homes two blocks from the busy intersection of I-95 (Bruckner Blvd) and East Tremont Avenue. The school would appear to have one or two sections per grade, total enrollment about 340.
